How to Approach Your Goals

Do you have a plan?

How many times have you set a goal and failed to reach it?  Your ultimate goal of X is set and you go on your merry way, trying your best to reach that long term goal.  You have all the motivation in the world and you want to reach your goal more than anything, but somewhere along the way you run out of gas, fall right back into your old habits and after a few months you are right back where you started.  A perfect example of this is the New Year’s resolutions that people set each year.  92.5% of all New Year’s resolutions are never achieved (a completely made up number but probably fairly accurate).  Are you part of that percentage?  Have you ever set a goal that you have failed to reach?  Chances are you have and it had nothing to do with how bad you wanted it and everything to do with your approach to achieving the goal.  What I am going to discuss below is a detailed approach on setting goals.  If you use the approach I discuss below you will greatly increase your chance of achieving the goals you set for yourself.

The Importance of Actually Tracking Your Workouts

I get probed on a daily basis about working out, food choices, the best way to train X muscle etc.  I always answer them all to the best of my ability and if I do not know the answer I find the answer from an actual reputable source (ie. not Men’s Health or Muscle and Fitness) and get back to them.  The majority of the questions revolve around the gym (for some reason that is where most people believe your six-pack is made).  Some typical questions are How can I deadlift more?  Why isn't my bench-press improving?  Why can't I seem to get any stronger?  My response to these types of questions is usually the same.  Show me your progress.  Show me your workout log

Marine Guide for Eating (Healthy) in the Field

Overview

This article is aimed at Marines, particularly Marines in units that have extremely limited access to fresh food while in the field, that are forced to consume MRE’s for weeks on end.  Keep in mind I am only looking at this from a health perspective and because I am not a fan of many of the items in MRE’s you will have to supplement with self-purchased items.

Estimating Your Caloric Intake

Why you are probably underestimating what you eat and overestimating how much you are burning and how it is affecting your goals.

You've had it.  You are overweight or at least unsatisfied with your current appearance in the mirror.  You decided to do something about it and set a goal.  You have taken the hardest step which is giving a crap but the most crucial steps are the ones that follow.  You decide to track the food that you are eating.  You start writing down everything, “estimating” what you are eating.  How accurate are you though?  Are you weighing everything?  Should you be?

Three Problems That Could Be Keeping You from Reaching your Goals

This is what failure looks like...

There are many reasons why people do not succeed at the different goals they set for themselves.  There are the obvious reasons such as completely sucking at what they are attempting or lack of knowledge or skill in the area but these aren’t the reasons I would like to talk about.  I want to talk about the less obvious reasons that are usually the root cause of your failure to reach a goal.  You may be suffering from one or more of these problems right now but with the proper guidance and corrective measures you can be back on the path that leads you to success.

Short Term Fasting and Its Effect on Your Metabolism

You are overweight because you eat like crap!

There is way too much information to just post a FaceBook reply so I am going to create a small article about it.  For some reason your metabolism has been incorrectly linked with the food you eat.  "Starvation Mode" is the word that is thrown around and it couldn't be further from the truth.  Here is a great quote from Brad Pilon's amazing book, Eat Stop Eat.

A Few Helpful Fatloss Tips

I hear the same comments and get the same questions all the time from people.  Just about everyone says they want to lose weight but losing body fat would probably be more accurate.  The following are a few helpful tips for losing fat.  I will add to this article as I get time.  I am also too lazy right now to put up references for everything, but eventually I will.
